چکیده

Gram-negative rods have assumed a major role in infectious disease, particularly among hospitalized patients. Among the Enterobacteriaceae, members of the genus Proteus may cause infections of the urinary' and respiratory2 tracts, as well as meningitis,8 soft tissue infections,' and septicemia.' However, mere isolation of these bacteria did not necessarily indicate the presence of infection. The most frequently encountered species has been the indol-negative P. mirabilis which has been studied from an epidemiological viewpoint, too.'-' The three indol-positive Proteus (IPP) species, P. morganii (PMo), P. vulgaris (PV), and P. rettgeri (PR), are encountered far less often in clinical specimens. In 1967, we isolated a significant number of them, and the present study examines some factors of distribution, antimicrobial sensitivity, clinical significance, and transmission of these organisms.

Late deoxyribonuclease activity of Salmonella enteriditis.

As a result of chance observations, the authors studied for deoxyribonuclease activity 16 strains of Salmonella, including six fresh isolates and ten stock cultures, with positive results in 13. Reactions characteristically occurred at 48 hours or later, with the majority being manifest at 72 hours and the latest at six days. No other positive reaction was observed among approximately 7,000 Ent...

The Agglutinability of Blood and Agar Strains of Typhoid Bacilli

Cultivation on 10 per cent rabbit blood agar did not affect the agglutinability of fifty-seven strains of typhoid bacilli. The authors were unable to confirm the observations of Gay and Claypole on the variation in agglutinability caused by cultivating the typhoid bacillus on blood agar. A typhoid bacillus showing irregularity in fermentation, agglutination, and indol production is described.

The formation and development of large bodies in Proteus vulgaris OX-19. I. Bright phase contrast observations of living bacteria.

The appearance of diverse morphological forms in Proteus vulgaris OX-19 (Stempen and Hutchinson, 1951) stimulated interest in a cytological investigation of the organism to compare the chromatinic structures in the large bodies and other "atypical" forms with those in the "normal" rods. Cytological studies on large bodies of Proteus have been previously reported by KlienebergerNobel (1949), Tul...
